Most aquarium problems don't appear overnight. They develop gradually — and by the time something is obviously wrong, the situation is often more serious than it looks. Here are seven signs that your aquarium needs professional attention, and what might be causing them.
Some cloudiness is normal in a new tank — bacterial blooms during the cycling process are expected and temporary. But persistent cloudiness in an established aquarium is a sign something is wrong.
White/grey cloudiness usually indicates a bacterial bloom caused by excess nutrients — overfeeding, a dead fish, or inadequate filtration. The most common causes are excess nutrients (nitrates and phosphates), too much light, or insufficient flow. Identifying which is driving your algae problem determines the right solution. Throwing products at it without understanding the cause rarely works long term.
Heaters running too hot or too cold. Pumps that are noisy or delivering reduced flow. UV steriliser bulbs that have exceeded their service life. Protein skimmers that have stopped pulling waste effectively. Equipment problems are easy to miss if you're not looking closely.
